DescriptionNorth Carolina August 8, 1778 $25 Sic Transit... Contemporary Counterfeit Fr. NC-179. PCGS Very Fine 35.
This is a rare contemporary counterfeit type and clearly differs from the genuine example cataloged in this Newman Internet 3 sale. In the fifth edition appendix, Eric P. Newman notes this counterfeit as "crude," which it is. The "n" in "Carolina" at the top is plainly reversed. Printed on thin paper. This is a fascinating contemporary counterfeit and essential to the study of North Carolina paper money of the period. This is the first counterfeit from the series we have observed and cataloged.

A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
