Prohibitively Rare and Strikingly Attractive North Carolina August 21, 1775 $5 Note

North Carolina August 21, 1775 $5 PCGS Very Fine 35.
The August 21, 1775 Hillsborough notes are a large format type with vignette that unfortunately yields mostly low grade or damaged examples. The $5 note has the Governor's Palace at Fort Tryon vignette in an oval, in this case very sharply detailed. PMG has graded only a single example of this note, a Fair 2. PCGS has graded three examples, none of which appear in the pop report as all are apparent or italic. This italic 35 is almost certainly the finest known, likely by a very substantial margin. It has been expertly repaired. The repairs are about 99% blank paper, just barely touching the frame line in one or two places. Every letter of the text, all of the signatures, and the razor sharp vignette are totally original and untouched. A highly impressive example worth whatever it takes to obtain it. Today's relatively flat Colonial market will likely provide a great opportunity as "whatever it takes" will likely be far less than what it will take in the future.
