DescriptionNorth Carolina April 4, 1748 5 Shillings Crown Fr. NC-61. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent.
This is an extremely rare, low-denomination note from the issue. Only 2,000 were printed and issued. None were graded at PCGS prior to this Newman Collection note. This type was not in the North Carolina accumulation sold years ago or in the Boyd collection. Mostly complete, with some paper loss at the left indent and lower right corner. The crown vignette is sharp. Backed on contemporary, thick paper. Noted with "Edge Damage" and as "Backed." Despite some faults, this example presents an important opportunity to obtain a rarity. The first we have cataloged.

A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
