    Extremely Rare April 4, 1748 Shilling
    Ex: Boyd and Gray Collections

    North Carolina April 4, 1748 1 Shilling Denomination in Circle Fr. NC-56 PMG About Uncirculated 50 Net.
    This is from an early Proclamation Money issue in which old bills were redeemed at the rate of 7 ½ in old bills for 1 new bill. The "12 Pence" denomination is in a circle at lower left, next to the ornate scroll indenting design. Signatories are Moseley, Starkey, Swann, and Allen. This low denomination from the issue was missing from the Newman Collection. It would have been useful to facilitate change and certainly circulated extensively. Very worn 1748 notes were exchanged for 1754 notes, explaining their rarity today. This former Thomas Gray Collection note is possibly the finest known and has tremendous eye-appeal. It is the F.C.C. Boyd Collection note, first auctioned in May 2004. PMG notes "Repaired, Pieces Added"; however, this restoration was done in a professional manner to enhance the attractiveness. The original Boyd collection penciled codes are intact on the blank back including his acquisition cost of "oyxy." That was $60 long ago. Ex: our 2018 Long Beach Sale, lot 20139 where it realized $2,280; Thomas A. Gray Collection of North Carolina Colonial Currency; Stack's Ford Part III sale, May 11-12, 2004, lot 779 (realized $1,006.25); F.C.C. Boyd Estate. This makes a perfect representative for this early act. Not only does Mike's example possess a beautiful appearance, it is certainly one of the rarest types from the series.
