DescriptionNorth Carolina April 2, 1776 $5 Triton PCGS Apparent Extremely Fine 40.
The Triton vignette represents a son of Poseidon and Amphitrite who has the head and trunk of a man and the tail of a fish. Triton is often represented with a conch-shell trumpet, however in this case it is a three-pronged fork. This is the clearest vignette of a Triton on any of the dozen or so examples we've handled. Once again, the engraver's initials appear on a note within this issue, in this case at the lower left corner. PCGS points out a plethora of piddling problems, all of which are present, none of which are serious. A very attractive example of a popular type.
