    Choice $5 Triton Note

North Carolina April 2, 1776 $5 Triton Fr. NC-162b PMG Extremely Fine 40.
The second of two $5 vignette types from the series with 10,000 notes printed. This higher denomination is rare in top condition. A pattern of flourishes surrounds "N Carolina Currency" at the top, and four different styles of FIVE DOLLARS appear on three sides. Triton floats at lower left. A choice example in a comment-free PMG holder. Ex: our CAA May 15-16, 1998 sale, lot 86. A perfect representative of the type and superior to most notes listed on Track & Price. On par with the Newman example that realized $1,116.25 in May 2017.
    From The Mike Coltrane Collection.
