Superb $3 Beehive Note
North Carolina April 2, 1776 $3 Beehive Fr. NC-160b PCGS About
New 53.A gorgeous note and one of the finest known. Like the beaver above, the bee is a symbol of industriousness. This is a beautiful, problem-free note printed from an early plate state and with deep black inking. At bottom left is a circular vignette of bees buzzing around the skep hive. The white-on-black floral design and text within the left and top borders adds a dramatic flair. There are three strong signatures. The blank back shows one endorsement. No comments are noted by grading; the paper is pleasing and unfettered by faults. Ex: our 2016 Long Beach sale, lot 18073 (realized $2,365.28); The Tar Heel Collection, Part II. Tied for the finest graded by PCGS. Technically not the top-graded note in Track & Price, but superior to the example (serial no. 6293) sold in November 2011 for $2,012.50.
