    Description

North Carolina April 2, 1776 $1/4 Bird Flying Fr. NC-155a PCGS Fine 15.
The first of eight differently styled $1/4 denominations from the popular Halifax issue. There are six vignettes from the animal kingdom (1 on land, 1 in the sky, and four under the sea) and two monogram types. Based upon the $1/8 sheet structure offered in this auction, it seems likely those animal-vignetted notes were also printed on a six-subject sheet and the two monogram types on a different, separate array. The curves at the top of the NC ligature and C at the top echo the inner border above. Patterned outer borders are on three sides, and the Bird Flying vignette is at bottom left. Printed from a well inked plate; the bird has deep black feathers. Noted by PCGS with "Splits, Tears, Damage, and Repairs; Pieces Replaced; Minor Stains." Ex: our 2018 Long Beach sale, lot 20196 where it realized $1,020; Thomas A. Gray Collection of North Carolina Colonial Currency. Despite the described technical faults, it faces up attractively.
