DescriptionNorth Carolina April 2, 1776 $1/16 Griffin Fr. NC-153d. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent.
This note and the next several are from one of the most intriguing and diverse issues in Colonial Currency. It features 56 types ranging in denomination from $1/16 to $20. The notes feature interesting vignettes of many kinds: animals, decorative objects, mythological creatures, patriotic motifs, and even monograms (see the Newman Internet Part 2 sale for all six monogrammed types). All low fractional denomination notes are hard to find in any grade. This rarity is only the second we have cataloged, the last in 2009. Noted with "Splits, Tears and Damage; Missing Pieces; Hinge Repairs on Back." The all-important vignette is sharp.

A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
