North Carolina November 27, 1729 £3 Contemporary Counterfeit PMG Very Fine 30 Net.
A very rare, early, wholly handwritten contemporary counterfeit note that employs the use of a paper covered wax seal. This handwritten note with penned indent design drawing at the top is from a rare and unusual indented Bills of Credit series. The hand accomplishment used to create the obligation across the top made the issue prone to fraudulent notes. However, even these contemporary counterfeits are rare today and genuine notes from this issue are virtually never seen with the massive Boyd-Ford holdings containing only one example, a 40s.

Even after typeset methods were employed to print notes, counterfeiting was a major problem. In "A Brief History of North Carolina Money," Neil Fulghum writes, "Legislation passed by North Carolina's assembly in 1745 required that for a first offense, anyone convicted of forging, altering, or knowingly passing counterfeit bills would publicly 'stand in the Pillory for the space of two hours, have his ears nailed to the same and cut off.' After a second conviction, the offender would be summarily executed 'without benefit of Clergy.'"
