Very Rare March 9, 1754 4 Pence - Not in the Newman Collection

North Carolina March 9, 1754 4 Pence Key Fr. NC-71a PMG Extremely Fine 40 Net.
The 4 pence, the lowest denomination from the act, shows an upright key in a circle at lower left next to the indenting design. Printed on the delicate laid paper observed on the lower denominations from the act. Another very rare North Carolina note; prior to cataloging this Gray-Boyd pedigreed note, the only other example we had sold was a raw Fine with large missing pieces and multiple tears in May 2003. This type was missing from the Newman Collection. When in the Boyd holding, this was nearly intact. However, the note is somewhat brittle, and restoration addressed some chipping as necessary. The area in the signature block and the signatures were affected; they were augmented and strengthened. The vignette and all of the other text are perfectly original, bright, and sharp. An old Wayte Raymond penciled code "HI" is seen on the verso. Only the contemporary dark Starkey signature is legible. PMG's comments are: "Repaired, Pieces Added." Ex: our 2018 HA Long Beach sale, lot 20142 where it realized $1,050; Thomas A. Gray Collection of North Carolina Colonial Currency; Stack's Ford Part III sale, May 11-12, 2004, lot 785 (realized 977.50); F.C.C. Boyd Estate; Wayte Raymond. A vastly underrated type due to the fact that the act's higher denominations are frequently encountered.
    From The Mike Coltrane Collection.
