North Carolina March 9, 1754 1s Swan PCGS About New 50.
When we offered this note in our 2011 September Long Beach Auction, our description read, "The swan is one of three varieties for the one shilling denomination from this issue, with the other two being a bear and a monogram design. We have only handled two 1 shilling notes from this issue, a Good example of the bear variety that had large pieces missing along with other problems and this swan note which realized $2,300 when it made its first appearance with us back in our FUN 2005 sale. We called it About New then and mentioned the issues that PCGS cited when assigning the apparent grade- minor ink erosion, small edge splits, hinge remnants on the back, and minor stains. A very rare note that we would expect to hammer above the previous level since collectors in today's market are more conscious of quality and rarity. The current edition of Friedberg seems more representative of the actual scarcity of these notes than does Newman as it lists them as 'Rare' in Very Fine, with no value listed in that grade or higher." The note has been re-holdered by PCGS as an italic 50, listing the same minor problems.
