North Carolina March 9, 1754 1 Shilling Swan Fr. NC-73a PCGS
About New 50.An interesting series with many denominations and emblem varieties. This is another rarity printed on thinner, delicate laid paper than what was used for the higher denominations. There are three emblems used on the 1 shilling notes: the swan -- as seen here -- the bear, and the North Carolina monogram. A charming folk art rendering of the swan within a circle. Indent at the left. Three signatures: Starkey in black and De Rosset and Sam Swann in blue. PCGS notes: "Minor Ink Erosion; Small Edge Splits; Hinge Remnants on Back; Minor Stains." Ex our 2018 HA Long Beach sale, lot 20146 where it realized $1,260; Thomas A. Gray Collection of North Carolina Colonial Currency; our 2011 Long Beach sale, lot 15531; Stack's Ford Part III sale, May 11-12, 2004, lot 787 (realized $1,610); F. C. C. Boyd Estate; Wayte Raymond. In a superior grade and with tremendous eye-appeal. Clearly a high condition example, and perhaps the finest known.
