Hillsborough North Carolina August 21, 1775 $8 - The Only Example Graded at Either Service

North Carolina August 21, 1775 $8 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 25.
The one and only example graded at both services combined. PCGS correctly cites restorations as the reason for the apparent grade, but they involve almost entirely design-free areas of the note and they are extremely well executed. This note bears a rather unique vignette showing a female personification of Great Britain running herself through with a sword. She is surrounded by the Latin motto, "INFELIX BRITANNIA," which Newman translates, "Unhappy England." Well signed and in spite of its problems, almost certainly one of the finest known.
