North Carolina August 21, 1775 $1/4 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30.The blank back of this highly important Hillsborough quarter dollar is covered by a piece of blank paper which supports a number of splits. There are also some fairly dark stains along some of the splits, apparently caused by an earlier effort to strengthen them. An extraordinarily important note, the first of its denomination that we have ever handled. No reliable census of Colonial notes exists, but we would not be at all surprised if the total for this note in all grades was less than ten, most of which would be tattered as this issue was rather large and printed on extremely soft, weak paper. There are nine different denominations, all of which are unpriced in any grade in Friedberg, with the simple comment "Very Rare." Newman prices the notes in Very Good at $1500 with no higher grade given. PCGS is right on the money with their assigned VF 30 grade, and were the stains removed, which is likely easily accomplished by a professional restorer, this note would have super eye appeal. All four signatures are strong, as is every detail of the engraving and every letter of the text. An extremely important note for the North Carolina collector or the advanced Colonial generalist.
