    Description

New York- New York City February 20, 1790 3d PMG About Uncirculated 55.
Harris H17. The small change notes from this series certainly should be classified as "paper coins"; they were created to satisfy "the want of small change" as cited from the Newman reference. The common style printed by Hugh Gaine, New York used ornamental borders on both sides. On the face, the engraved signature of City Treasurer D. Phoenix is in script. Most notes from the series are worn, and many are damaged. This is a sharp example and one of the nicest we have sold. We recently sold a PMG EF 45 two pence note for $336. This same note first sold in a 2012 auction for over $500.

    Estimate: $400 - up.
