The Earliest Issued New York Note

New York May 31, 1709 5s Very Fine. The earliest New York note and the only one of its era that can be considered available to collectors. Available, in this case, means appearances on the market every year or so. The majority of the notes from this issue came from a very small hoard which was uncovered by Wayte Raymond 60 or so years ago. The notes from that hoard are AU or New, and tend to be rather pricey. This is the only circulated example of this issue that we have seen. The signatures and serial number are strong and legible, and the note is problem free save for a carefully closed center split and a few unimportant edge problems. The survival of this note, which actually circulated in New York City in the early Eighteenth Century when the entire city was a cluster of a few blocks below Wall St. (which was not a street at that time but rather an actual wall), is of great significance to collectors.

    Estimate: $6,000 - up.
