Handsome 1709 Type "a" New York Five Shilling Note
New York May 31, 1709 5s PCGS Extremely Fine 45.By far the earliest available signed and issued Colonial notes. These 1709 New York Notes are the earliest currency from the colony and among the earliest available notes from any colony. Because they come in choice condition normally, they are very appealing. These May 31, 1709 notes were authorized for Canadian military expeditionary forces to build three forts and transport troops up the Hudson. Uniface and printed in black by William Bradford, without imprint, on horizontal four-subject sheets. They are typeset with a top indented block. There are three very bold vanity style signatures in the character of the period. The Johannes DePeyster signature in particular flows artistically under the obligation. There are two plate positions with different styles. This is the "a" design with "Shillings" broken between the first and second line, the "C" in Colony below the level of the other letters, and the "Governor" spelling. A very bold example with deep, natural embossing and that is well margined and quite full. PCGS has used the italic for the 45 and commented, "rust stains; small splits." Both of which are accurate, but do not materially detract from the eye appeal. Biographies of the signers provide interesting reading.
