New York Water Works 8s Sheet of Eight

New York March 5 , 1776 (Water Works) 8s Sheet of Eight PCGS Choice New 63PPQ.
This is one of only two examples we have seen of a Waterworks sheet in forty plus years in the business. We sold this sheet raw in our 2005 Long Beach Auction for $3,737.50. These notes were printed on two separate pieces of paper that have been joined together somewhere in the printing process. The face is on a fine light tan paper and the back on a very course, fibrous dark brown paper. On this example, the white face sheet was slightly broader than the brown back sheet and the white edges show all the way around the back. The heavy dark back paper was often flawed. On this sheet, there is only one such flaw in one of the notes, which prevented the back from printing completely and allows the back of the lighter front sheet to show through. There are no folds or defects save for four printing registration holes, as made, and as seen on all two-sided printed sheets of the period, that fall in the wide margin area between the notes. All eight notes are numbered and signed. An incredible item that should find its way into a significant Colonial collection.
