Eight Subject New York March 5, 1776 Water Works SheetNew York March 5 , 1776 (Water Works) 8s Sheet of Eight PCGS Choice New 63PPQ. This extraordinarily rare, and quite possibly unique sheet, allows a clear view of how these New York City Water Works notes were printed on two types of paper mounted together. The light colored, fine face paper was a touch larger than the cruder, coarse back paper allowing the edges of the face to be seen from the back. We've seen this effect on individual notes, but it is far clearer when viewed on the sheet. The 63 PPQ grade is accurate for the sheet which shows some minor handling, but the individual notes would each grade well higher (with the possible exception of one where the margins are a bit tight). On most sheets, the grades of the individual notes is of far more consequence, but with sheets of this rarity, cutting is not a sensible option. The notes on this sheet are numbered from 817 to 824 out of a total of only 2500 printed. The Newman reference values these eight notes at $1000 apiece in Choice New, but the value of this sheet exceeds that.
Estimate: $12,500 - up.
