New York March 5, 1776 $1/8 PMG Very Good 10 Net.
£55,000 in legal tender Bills of Credit was authorized under the provisions of the March 5, 1776 Resolution, with one third payable in 1779, 1780, and 1781. A later approval of an additional 6000 $1/8 notes increased the total authorized amount. The $1/8 denomination has the typical coat of arms of the City of New York on the face and a small emblem depicting a fire with the motto NON DIU (Not for long) on the back. This example has seen a lot of circulation that has resulted in it being severed and rejoined the old fashioned way with needle and thread. The repair dates to when the note was actually still in circulation and was intended to just keep the note going a little bit longer. The halves do not quite match up evenly, but that was not the objective of the exercise. A neat addition to any collection, showing the extremes to which people would go in order to have money available in circulation.
