    Description

New York January 6, 1776 (Water Works) 4s PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.
These notes were issued to raise funds "for supplying this City with fresh Water, by means of a Steam Engine, Reservoir, and Conduit Pipes." The design on the back of the notes is that of a steam operated water pump proposed by Christopher Colles (1738-1821). Colles was born in Ireland and emigrated to the U.S. in 1771. Construction of the reservoir began on the east side of Broadway, between Pearl and White Streets, but unfortunately the Revolutionary War put an end to work on the project. Bayard's signature is clearly visible, but the other signature has largely faded.
