    Description

New York January 6, 1776 (Water Works) 2s PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
An outstanding example of the scarcest of the four Water Works issues. It is a well margined piece exhibiting embossing and the mounting is perfect. Mounting in this case refers to the gluing together of the face and back of the note. The faces of the notes were printed on a fine buff stock and the backs on a much courser, darker paper. The two pieces were mounted together prior to the printing of the note, which often led to wrinkles, holes, gaps, and other problems. The note in this lot is completely problem free. The last time we auctioned an example in this precise PCGS grade, it realized $1,116 in April, 2015.
From the David F. Noyes Collection, Part I

    Estimate: $1,000 - up.
