    Description

New York January 6, 1776 (Water Works) 2s PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.
The small "3" above the bold "T" indicates that this two shillings note is from the third Water Works issue. The notes were printed by Hugh Gaine. The note has nice margins and dark ink. It is numbered 4081 and was signed by Gautier and Cruger. Even at the full Gem grade assigned, the piece appears to our eye to be undergraded. These notes were printed on two pieces of paper glued together prior to printing. The faces on a fine, light colored paper, and the backs on a coarser dark grey paper. On this issue the back is smaller than the face, clearly showing the technique used.
