New York February 16, 1771 £5 Fine. Only 6000 genuine notes were printed, although many were counterfeited. Newman's The Early Paper Money of America lists diagnostics to detect the counterfeits. This example meets one of the criteria. The comma is over the e in Payments rather than over the m. Elisha Gallaudet cut the top and left borders as well as the Arms of New York City for this issue. He made the cuts for several other issues as well. Hugh Gaine printed these notes on thin paper. A native of Ireland, he worked with James Parker for a time and then set up his own press circa 1750. He died at the age of 81 on April 25, 1807. This example was signed by Samuel Verplanck, Theophylact Bache, and A. Lott. This bright note was cut in half and has since been reattached and a few other repairs have been made. The bottom edge reveals two small notches.
