Scarce 1771 New York Contemporary Counterfeit

New York February 16, 1771 £5 Contemporary Counterfeit PCGS Apparent Fine 15.
Merriam-Webster's dictionary describes the adjective Leviathan as something large and formidable. The margins of this 1771 New York colonial are both large and formidable when compared to a vast majority of examples that we typically see. We have only sold a handful of contemporary counterfeits from this series, the last of which was way back in 2010. This is a very deceptive example whose diagnostic, as listed in Newman, is the lines below the settler and Indian slanting downward from left to right. PCGS does note there are splits, tears, minor damage, repairs, minor stains, and pinholes. With all that said, the visual impact afforded this piece is exceptional and in all likelihood our estimate will prove to be foolishly conservative.
