DescriptionNew York- Corporation of the City of New York 3d February 20, 1790 Harris 17 PCGS Very Fine 20.
Listed in both Newman and Harris, this was the highest of three denominations from this issue. According to Newman, the notes were authorized "to satisfy 'the want of small change' and to prevent the great losses 'to the poorer classes of citizens from the circulation of base coppers.'" The 2 and 3 Pence notes were counterfeited in London. Hugh Gaine was the printer of the issue, and the printed signature of City Treasurer Daniel Phoenix appears. A rarity of R6, 6 to 10 known, was listed by Harris. A superb example with huge margins on all sides. These seem to sell for around $300 in so-so VF grade.
