    Description

New York August 25, 1774 (Water Works) 8s PMG Very Fine 25 Net.
Newman notes that this issue was the first paper money issued by an American city, intended to finance a new municipal waterworks. Bold embossing is clearly evident through the holder on this Water Works note and the signatures of Hicks and Watts can still be seen. Only 2500 of these 8 shillings notes were printed. Residue, observed along the left (or bottom) margin on the back of the note, resulted in the net grade.
