New York August 25, 1774 (Water Works) 1s PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
£2400 (originally £2500) in Promissory Notes of the City of New York was approved on August 25, 1774. The denominations comprised 1s, 2s, 4s, and 8s, with the 4s value printed but inadvertently never authorized while the 6s value was authorized but never printed. 4000 1s notes were printed. This series is popular with collectors as the back design depicts the proposed steam operated water pump. The face has a banner-like border inscribed NEW-YORK WATER WORKS. The borders of the face were printed in red, red and black, or black depending on the denomination. The note is well printed on bright paper with ample clear margins and good color. The signatures of Whitehead Hicks and J. Watts, Jr. are bold and legible. PMG indicates that the note was previously mounted as evidenced by minor scuffing and adhesive residue stains in the corners of the face (the note was mounted to display the back).
