DescriptionNew York August 2, 1775 (Water Works) 8s PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.
A broadly margined, bright, well signed example from the second New York City Water Works issue. The signers of this piece were Whitehead Hicks and J. Watts, Jr. This is the issue with the border elements and some of the text printed in red, with the remainder in black, giving the note excellent eye appeal. The face is printed on fine, light paper, and the back on coarse, dark paper. The two pieces were then mounted together. A charming - and in this grade, important - Colonial note. This 8 Shilling example has the lowest printing of the three denominations and is valued in the Newman reference at $1,000 in Choice Unc with no price given for Gem.
