New York April 21, 1760 £5 PCGS Apparent Extremely Fine 40.
PCGS has only graded five of this number, with all of them having received apparent grades. Since apparents are not listed in the census, there is no way to know whether or not this is the finest known, but it is a fairly safe presumption as this is a gorgeous note for this issue and 40 is an extremely high grade. We've handled most of them and this is the highest grade and best looking by far. The Newman example as an apparent 12 and it realized $258. This piece, which has the eye appeal of a problem-free XF, is certainly a four-figure note. PCGS has assigned the apparent grade for, "restorations; design and signatures redrawn." All are accurate, but using high magnification we are of the opinion that the signatures were only lightly strengthened in a few areas, primarily where they cross the repaired center split and the vast majority of the signatures we are looking at are in the original ink and as applied.
