DescriptionNew York April 18, 1786 £1 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30.
Very little work has been done on this wonderfully high-grade, late New York note. PCGS mentions restorations, but all we can see are two replaced corner tips and some rebuilding of the blank border areas. The signatures, border elements, coat of arms, and text are utterly untampered, strictly original, and virtually as new. That's the good news. The shame of what would have been a five-figure note is the large hole cancel, which is slightly larger than a dime. The Newman note was also a VF30 apparent. It was actually far lower in grade than this note, but it did not have the seriously disturbing cancel. It realized $4,935. This note has many advantages over that note and one big disadvantage. We would expect a realization right around $2,000.
Estimate: $2,000 - up.
