    200

New York April 18, 1786 5s PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20.
The Act of April 18, 1786 authorized £200,000 in Bills of Credit receivable for taxes. These notes were to be redeemed by June 1800. The values issued ranged from 5s to £10. The face design finally substituted the recently created State of New York coat of arms for the City of New York coat of arms. Peter Maverick engraved the major design elements for this series and Samuel Loudon printed the notes. All notes from this late State of New York issue, even contemporary counterfeits, are very rare. False notes were so widespread that the entire issue had to be withdrawn and replaced with February 8, 1788, notes. Few genuine bills still exist, with around a half dozen examples reported. PCGS indicates that this note has restorations and parts of the design and signatures redrawn. This note indeed has had lots of cosmetic surgery, but much of the text and almost all of the border elements and the State of New York coat of arms are over 90% original. We sold this note for $750 in our 2018 FUN Currency Signature Auction and believe that this rarity will again test those levels.

    Estimate: $700 - up.
