Facsimile New York February 16, 1771 £5 / St. Jacobs Oil Ad Note Extremely Fine.
It is highly unusual for a facsimile Colonial to be the host advertising note for a snake oil concoction. This ad note touted St. Jacobs Oil which became an international best seller. The visionary behind it was August Vogeler (1819-1908). He immigrated to the United States from Germany in his twenties and within 5 years had become a manufacturing druggist under the firm name of A. Vogeler & Co., Baltimore. In the 1870s he partnered with his eldest son, Charles A. Vogeler (1877-1919), and John H. Winkleman, and sometime after 1878 they began to manufacture what St. Jacobs Oil. The advertisement printed on the back uses old English print with "f" like "s."
