(Little Falls, New York) - John Porteus "at my Store, at the Little Falls" Undated (Ca. 1790's) 2 Pence Newman page 306, Harris H2. PCGS Extremely Fine 40 Apparent.
Sold in our May 2016 Newman auction where we described it as, "This is an extremely rare note and series. Printed uniface on laid paper with the imprint: C. R. and G. Webster Albany. This denomination is the only example we have observed from the series. The Newman and Harris plate notes illustrate the same red-printed six pence, serial number 200. There is also an unissued 4 pence we cataloged and sold in 2007. The issuer name is verified by a small handwritten scrip we cataloged with the mentioned 4 pence note. This note has intricate bordering, with wider indenting at the left end. The text is in the right two-thirds with an oversize 'O' (a drop cap) in the obligation. The denomination is at the top and in the left indenting. Bright and bold overall. Noted only with a 'Small Internal Tear near LR Corner.' A key Albany area private note." Porteus, a native of Perth, Scotland, was a successful trader in Little Falls. According to manuscripts at the University of Michigan, "During the American Revolution, Porteous worked as a merchant in New York City, and helped to supply the local garrison with British goods. He was also part-owner of the British privateer Vengeance." He died in March 1799, placing these notes in the 18th century.

    Estimate: $1,500 - up.
