Choice September 2, 1775 $3 "Ten Commandments" Type

    New York September 2, 1775 $3 Fr. NY-179. PCGS Choice New 63PPQ.
This $3 John Holt-printed note is one of the finest of its series and type. Printed on thick paper using a design style initiated in 1737 with New York arms at the right and three border cuts. The back has ornate border cuts with the denomination swirling on ribbons; type ornaments are across the bottom. This denomination features a back emblem showing the Ten Commandments vignette with motto LEX REGIT ARMA TUENTUR (Law rules, weapons protect). This back is illustrated on the color plates on page 51 of the Newman reference. Margins are extremely broad on three sides and wide on the bottom. The surfaces are immaculate. Both signatures are sharp, although Evert Bancker's (in black) is more prominent than Robert Ray's, who signed in red (the red often fades). Choice New notes from the series are underrated and undervalued compared to many New Jersey and Pennsylvania notes from the same period. A splendid Thirteen Colony set note.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
