    Description

Very Scarce 1755 New York Issue

New York March 25, 1755 £10 PMG Choice Fine 15 Net.
Unpriced in Newman, although there is a notation that an AU of this note brought over $7700 in Stack's May 2004 sale. Although almost all colonial notes carry some form of the "Tis Death to Counterfeit" warning, few counterfeiters were ever executed. A man by the name of Owen Sullivan was one of the unfortunates, and he was hanged in New York City on May 10, 1756 for counterfeiting the 1755 issue. According to Newman, "Concealment of his counterfeit money plates was made a felony by a New York Act of July 9, 1756, because at his execution he would not disclose their whereabouts." A broadly margined note with bold detail on the state Coat of Arms and with three reasonably legible signatures intact. PMG does note splits and a stain. The Midnight Ride example sold for $718.75 and that was graded PCGS Apparent Fine 15 back in the doldrums that were the 2009 market. In our 2015 Long Beach sale, we sold a substantially less attractive 3 pound note, graded PCGS Apparent Fine 12, for $881.25. We fully expect a note such as this, wielding both technical and aesthetic merits, to transcend the four-figure barrier.
