High Grade and Excessively Rare Brown Back £6 October 20, 1758, New Jersey
New Jersey October 20, 1758 £6 PCGS Apparent Extremely Fine 40.The first example we have ever handled for this "Brown Back" issue. Two issues from this era have the back of the £6 printed in green, but only this issue utilized brown. The print run was an incredibly small 250 notes. The note itself is in super grade for its era, as almost all high denomination pieces from New Jersey in the 1750's up through 1762 were found as rags. This one is fully XF, with the Apparent grade assigned only for a "Minor Edge Separation." The brown color on the back is immediately apparent and the back printing is sharp and clear. The serial number of 12040 seems mysterious for a print run of 250, but is explained when one looks at the 6s from this same issue, illustrated on page 255 of Newman. For some reason the serial numbers were run straight through or combined with another issue, as the serial number on the illustrated 6s note is 13809 and only 4,000 examples were printed. A wonderful rarity in great grade, and a must-have for the serious collector of New Jersey Colonial notes.
