    Description

New Jersey February 20, 1776 30s Choice About New. This note is boldly signed by John Hart, one of the signers of the Declaration of independence. Hart's signature is much rarer on this February issue than it is on the March 25 issue to follow. That's particularly the case on fully signed examples such as this. Hart, along with Samuel How, had signed a number of notes from this issue which were stolen by the British in a military raid. These notes were circulated before the third signature was added, although they were actually invalid as currency without the third signature. Hart's signature on a fully signed version is extremely scarce, and on this particular note, it's unusually clear and bold. Even the original embossing remains on this beautifully margined, low-numbered (83) piece. It was previously Lot 240 from New Netherlands' December 1975 sale.
