Description

New Jersey 1786 6s PCGS Very Fine 25.
James Ewing, one of the signers of this note, was the youngest son of Thomas Ewing, Sr. and Mary Maskell. He was born July 12, 1744 and was a member of the less famous New Jersey "Tea Party". On the night of Thursday, Dec. 22, 1774, Ewing and others destroyed a quantity of tea which had been landed at Greenwich NJ, contrary to the Articles of Association of the Continental Congress. He was elected to the Assembly from Cumberland County in 1778. For a short time he was a partner of Isaac Collins, the printer of the New Jersey Gazette and the printer of this note. For several years he was one of the Commissioners of the State Loan Office. He was Mayor of Trenton from 1797-1803 and died October 23, 1823. VF 25 is an excellent grade for this issue and the best we have sold for any of the denominations. In our Newman Auction last October we sold a 6s PCGS 12 Apparent for $822.

    Estimate: $1,500 - up.
