    Extremely Rare 1s April 3, 1742 Redated 1743

    New Hampshire April 3, 1742 Redated 1743 1s PCGS Apparent Fine 12.
The only example of this rare note that we have ever offered. We originally auctioned this note raw in January 2004, which was one year before the two major grading services began their operations. Our description then was "This incredibly rare early New Hampshire note has had the left three-quarters of an inch re-attached, apparently using a piece of an identical bill, possibly the original missing piece. The large part of the bill has been contemporarily backed and the much smaller re-attached portion has not, giving them a slightly different cast. The two pieces otherwise match with perfection. Two of the three signatures are strong and legible and, other than the re-attached piece, the only restoration is a small piece at the upper-right corner. Every word of the text on the face is legible, and the note gives a very nice overall appearance. An extraordinary rarity that should be avidly contested by this Colony's many advanced collectors." All New Hampshire notes from April 1, 1737 through July 25, 1775 are unvalued in Friedberg. The same holds true for Newman, but only through July 1, 1763. That is not much of a concern with this rare note from the 1740s, even with backing, splits, tears, damage, and some replaced pieces. This example that looks much better than what those qualifiers suggest realized $5117.50 in 2004, and over eleven years later, our estimate may prove to be low.
