Very Rare January 26, 1776 "First Daniel Fowle" Issue $4 Note

New Hampshire January 26, 1776 $4 Fr. NH-156. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent.
This rarity is from the first date Daniel Fowle, Portsmouth imprinted series and only encountered in the most advanced collections. The faces have a very interesting type style with concealed ornamental motto features on the four highest denominations. On the $4 notes, it is NILDESPERANDUM (Nothing is to be despaired). Printed on "durable stock" as cited in Ford X, the notes were sturdy. This is a solid representative with superior margins all around. Minor flaws are noted as "Edge Splits; Small Tape Repair on Back." The series is not often offered; the $3 denomination from April's Newman VI sale realized $3,290 in VF 35 Apparent, with that example having some paper chipped off. This solid note has superior eye appeal and represents the rare series well.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
