Handwritten Letter from Charles Lee. Dumfries, Virginia. Dec. 13, 1782 Not Graded.
An entirely handwritten letter as follows:
    Dear Sir,
I subjoin an order for fifteen guineas on Mr. Harrison of Oxen Hill agreeable to his desire out of which you will please to pay Mr. Digges what I lost with him at your house which I do not exactly recollect at this time. The balance you will pay to Mr. Sam Arele who I hope has repaid the tobacco you were so obliging as to lend your sincere friend.
    Charles Lee
P.S. I am told by good authority that Tamerlane is well again.
    Col Fitzgerald

Colonel John Fitzgerald was an Irish immigrant who became an aide-de-camp for George Washington in late 1776. He fought at Trenton, Princeton, Germantown and Brandywine. He left the Continental Army in 1778 after being wounded at the Battle of Monmouth.

Charles Lee had a storied political career. He was a younger brother of General Light Horse Harry Lee and therefore an uncle of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. For a few weeks Lee was John Adams Acting Secretary of State, which followed a stint the he held for six years as Attorney General under both Washington and Adams. Jefferson tried to nominate Lee to the Supreme Court but he declined.
