State of Massachusetts Bay Six Percent Treasury Certificate £97, 18s Dec. 1, 1777 Anderson MA 10 Very Fine.
The desirable Sword-in Hand vignette at upper left is dark and well printed and displays exquisite detail on this widely margined indented certificate. Nathaniel Hurd was the engraver of the vignette. The signatures remain dark and the paper retains good color on this piece that is mounted on heavy paper that is folded in half at left and has a cut out portion that provides a view of the back of the certificate. The folded piece measures 15 inches tall by 9 1/2 inches wide. These certificates were authorized on October 13, 1777 and due on March 1, 1781. This example was payable to Jacob Forole (?) and signed by I. Scollay, Eze. Price, and P. Boyer (Committee) and H. Gardner (treasurer). Gardner's signature is crossed out with several "X"s as a means of cancellation. Pinholes and small splits are observed. According to Anderson in The Price of Liberty, at least 6200 were issued. He assigned a rarity rating of R4, indicating 76 to 200 known examples, when the book was published in 1983.
