Massachusetts State Lottery Third Class £15 January 1, 1780 MA 15.
These six-percent Treasury Certificates are visually quite similar to the advance-pay-to-officers Certificates. They share the same Pinetree and Rattlesnake vignette, and very similar border cuts. The difference is in their usage, with these certificates used to pay the winners in the state lottery. This particular example is listed in Anderson as MA 15, with a rarity rating of R-4 (76 to 200 survivors.) This Fine-Very Fine piece has extensive ink erosion in the treasurer's signature and at top center. There is also ink erosion at center that is approximately one inch long horizontally. Fiscal items such as this are found in The Price of Liberty by William G. Anderson.
