    Description

Massachusetts October 18, 1776 4 Pence Fr. MA-224 PMG Apparent Very Fine 30.
The Paul Revere-engraved face plate was first used on this issue. There are two dates and back styles for the "Codfish" bills. The 1776 notes with the John Gill backs (as seen here) are much scarcer than the later 1778 notes, and especially so in high grades. An evenly circulated note with excellent centering. PCGS noted only "Small Edge Tears." Ex: our Eric P. Newman Internet Part 2 sale, January 2017, lot 90081; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Overall, a bright note with bold face printing.
    From The Mike Coltrane Collection.
