DescriptionMassachusetts October 16, 1778 1s 6d PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
As of mid-February 2012, PMG's population report reveals that this is the highest graded example of the nine notes they have handled. These notes are especially appealing due to the fact that this Codfish issue utilizes plates made for the 1776 issue by Paul Revere. The plates were altered by Revere to the 1778 date and the faces of these notes were printed in Revere's shop. This well preserved example was signed by Richard Cranch and his signature remains bold. Cranch was married to Mary Smith, the sister of Abigail Adams. Cranch was a bibliophile who supported Harvard's library and he had a wide variety of interests, among them, he was considered an expert in biblical prophecy. T.S. Eliot was his great-great grandson.
