Massachusetts May 25, 1775 "40s" PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20.
Contemporarily raised from a 15 shillings note to a 40 shillings note by skillful pen and ink alteration. The note appears to have continued to circulate after the alteration was done in spite of the fact that no 40 shillings note was ever issued. The apparent grade is assigned not for the altered denomination but for multiple repaired splits which are executed with paper tape on the blank back of the note. Almost every example of this issue that we have seen has been pen cancelled through the Henry Gardner signature. This note apparently was turned away at redemption and remains uncancelled. Certainly difficult to estimate, but a genuine Paul Revere product (other than the "Forty").
