    Description

Massachusetts June 18, 1776 12s PMG Very Fine 20 Net.
The June 18, 1776 dollar denomination, or Small Sword in Hand notes were printed by Benjamin Edes on coarse paper. They have the vertical format of the Revere Swords, but the Patriot emblem is smaller and appears on the face rather than the back. The notes were denominated in both dollars (here $2) and shillings. Benjamin Edes (1732-1803) was a member of the Sons of Liberty and publisher of the Boston Gazette, along with his partner, printer John Gill. His ability to evade capture while transporting the Gazette's printing press and type to Watertown, Massachusetts was important for keeping his patriotic newspaper operating. John Gill left the partnership when his political opinions began to diverge from those of Edes. He died in obscurity and poverty, despite his influence in the Revolution. We have sold only two other 12s notes recently - a PCGS 45PPQ for over $5000 at our 2015 FUN Auction and a PCGS 12 Apparent last October for $969. The Net grade for this note is from being previously mounted, minor splits and annotations.
