Massachusetts December 7, 1775 8d PCGS Apparent Very Good 08.
The Apparent grade has been assigned for "Splits and Repairs," which are present but of only minor consequence. There were sixteen denominations for this issue, with the eight pence notes being the lowest of those. Of those sixteen, it carries the highest value in the Friedberg reference, although Newman does not differentiate values among most of the notes. Although PCGS has not released a Colonial census, PMG's records indicate they have graded only one example, a Fine 12. Not surprisingly, these notes are quite popular with collectors as they were printed by Paul Revere and include the "Sword in Hand" vignette. In spite of its low grade, the all-important "Sword in Hand" vignette is clear and the note certainly retains plenty of eye appeal and charm. That, added to the scarcity of these notes, should command a premium. We have sold only two others, a PCGS 40 Apparent for just over $9,000, and a PCGS 20 Apparent for just under $4,000. We would expect this note to realize right around $2,500
